Noteworthy Cause for Kevin
New Zealand Women's Day January 27, 1997
When Kevin Smith jumps on stage for "Schweppes Showtime" this
Saturday, he'll e John Travolta and Cliff Richard rolled into one.
While he carries less weight than bulked-up John and is more risque than
Christian Cliff, the sexy actor is still confident he can pull of sensational
renditions of the songs "Summer Nights" from "Grease" and "All
I ask of You" from "The Phantom of the Opera."
However, in spite of performing in recent musicals "Cabaret" and "Braindead,"
Kevin believes the expected 250,000 audiecne at Auckland's Domain will be
forgiving, not thinking he can sing. "When people think about New Zealand
singers my name doesn't usually spring to mind, so I guess the audience will cut
me a little slack to start with," grins the star of "Hercules: The
Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess."
While thrilled to be in the stage show, which replaces last year's Opera In
The Park, he says his main motivation is to help raise money for the show's
charity, Plunket.
