THE CHOICE WE MAKE

Disclaimers: This is a work of pure fiction. Well, actually this is my project for my night class (one of the reasons why Reunion and my other story is taking such a long time to complete, yes, blame this). The characters of Xena, Gabrielle and most of the Amazons belong to Renaissance Pictures, MCA/Universal, etc. I mean no infringement on their rights. I did however create a new major character and her history for this story but then it's strictly for fun and enjoyment.
Sex and violence: None more than the show I feel. But then, we all have different yardsticks, don't we?
Comments: Yes, please. The more the merrier. And BTW, this is my first COMPLETE story, so I really would like to know what you think. And one last thing, does anyone know for sure which battle Ares mentioned in the Herc/Xena crossover Judgment Day? Torrence? Torentz? Corinth? I've taken the middle spelling for this story.
TEASER
FADE IN:
EXT. PATH - DAY
A wagon filled with supplies, drawn by two horses and escorted by SIX AMAZONS, leading them is SOLARI, is making its way along the narrow path, densely surrounded by trees. The horses are fidgeting and NEIGHING softly.
ON Solari as she pats one of the horses
SOLARI
What's up, girl? What is it?
As another Amazon does the same for the other horse, faint RUSTLING sounds can be heard from the trees.
ON Solari as she holds up one hand
SOLARI
Hold!
(beat)
I think I hear something...
Suddenly from above the trees, TEN armed SOLDIERS jump down and surround the Amazon party. The Amazons find themselves outnumbered as they draw their swords in defence.
The soldiers give a collective SHOUT as they rush forward at the same time to begin their attack. They move to separate the Amazons from one another and succeed, each of the Amazons finding themselves being separated from their comrades.
CUT TO:
EXT. FURTHER DOWN THE SAME PATH - DAY
XENA and GABRIELLE are on ARGO. Gabrielle is seated behind Xena, her arms encircling Xena's waist; her head is resting comfortably on Xena's back. Gabrielle lifts her head up as she
GABRIELLE
Xena?
XENA
Hmm?
GABRIELLE
Thanks for coming with me. I know how much
you hate this type of celebrations...
Xena's POV as she turns back to look at Gabrielle
XENA
Gabrielle, I don't hate...
Xena stops when FAINT sounds of the fight ahead reaches her sharp ears, she perks right up. ON Gabrielle's worried expression.
GABRIELLE
(softly)
Xena... what's wrong?
ON Xena as she frowns, concentrating very hard.
XENA
Sounds like fighting, up ahead.
She reaches down one of the saddlebags and hands over Gabrielle's unassembled staff and helps Gabrielle down from Argo.
XENA
I'm going ahead to see if I can help, join me as
soon as you can.
GABRIELLE
I'll be right behind you.
Xena nods and spurs Argo forward. ON Gabrielle as she quickly assembles her staff and runs towards the direction Xena has taken off.
CUT TO:
EXT. PATH - DAY
Back to first scene, the Amazons are losing this fight.
CAMERA FINDS Solari who is spotting a deep gash on her right arm, as she and the other Amazons fight desperately to try and push back the soldiers.
Solari's POV as Xena's WARCRY can be heard loudly and SOUNDS of Argo thundering down the path unsettles the soldiers somewhat. Soon the figure of Xena atop Argo is seen riding up the path.
ON Solari's tired smile in relief as Xena launches herself off Argo and straight into the fray, helping Solari fight off the soldiers attacking her.
SOLARI
Boy, am I glad to see you.
ON Xena as she smiles at Solari.
ON the soldiers as they fall back and try to regroup. CU on their leader
LEADER
Xena, the Warrior Princess!
ON Xena as she twirls her sword around, observing the soldiers warily. CU on Xena
XENA
Yes, so you've heard of me.
ON Gabrielle as she finally arrives and then the Amazons who have taken up positions near Xena.
Back ON the group of soldiers
LEADER
Xena, would love to stay and fight. But I'm sure
my lord would want to know of your arrival.
(beat)
Let's go!
With that the soldiers turn and disappear into the nearby forest. Some of the Amazons make moves to follow but
XENA
No, let them go.
ON the Amazons as they look to Solari who is covering her injured arm with one hand.
Solari's POV as she looks to Gabrielle who nods her head in agreement.
SOLARI
Hold! Xena's right. We're already hurting, won't
do us any good to follow them.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. FURTHER DOWN THE PATH - DAY
CU on the sign hanging from the trees that signifies the start of Amazon lands. The small party walk past under the sign and into friendly lands with several of the Amazon warriors holding and/or helping each other. Xena, Gabrielle and Solari are covering the rear of the party. Solari's arm is bandaged. Mid-scene.
XENA
...and these attacks have gone on for how long?
SOLARI
On and off for almost two moons now.
GABRIELLE
Who's behind these attacks? I can't imagine anyone
in their right frame of mind would want to pick a
fight with the Amazons.
SOLARI
(sadly)
I think she knows what she's doing.
XENA & GABRIELLE
(surprised)
SHE?
SOLARI
The warlord.
(beat)
Her name's Reyann.
CU on Xena's surprised look as she freezes in her tracks.
CU on Gabrielle's shocked expression as she too freezes in her tracks.
Back ON Solari as she carries on walking without them, too engrossed in her own thoughts to notice her companions stopping. Xena and Gabrielle avoid eye contact with one another as they recover and continue along the way.
FADE OUT:
ACT ONE
FADE IN:
EST. REYANN'S CAMP - DAY
The camp is tidy and well-organised. The tents are well erected. Some soldiers are sparing with one another, while others are on guard duty.
INT. REYANN’S TENT - DAY
The interior of the tent is dark. The only light source is from two torches by the entrance. In the middle of the tent, there is a big table with a map of the surrounding lands on it. And on the map are several carved wooden figurines, signifying the Amazons, soldiers and the warlord. The tent is otherwise simply furnished, with a few more chairs, side table, bed and several chests lying around.
CAMERA FINDS REYANN (she is dressed in simple, functional leather armour), the warlord, is seated on her high-backed chair, sipping wine from a goblet. A SERVANT is standing nearby with a pitcher of wine. A ray of bright sunlight shines in as the tent flap is withdrawn to reveal a SOLDIER who enters and salutes
SOLDIER
My lord, Lieutenant Dorian is back and he wishes
to speak with you.
ON Reyann as she nods and dismisses the soldier and her servant with a lazy wave of her hand. They leave.
ON Dorian as he enters. Dorian is the leader from the teaser. He replaces the flap and salutes his lord
DORIAN
My liege.
ON Reyann
REYANN
(sipping her wine)
Good news?
DORIAN
Yes and no, my liege.
REYANN
I've no wish to play guessing games with
you, Dorian.
DORIAN
(quickly)
Well, my liege, we almost got to the Amazons
when a warrior interfered and fought us off.
REYANN
(sipping her wine)
And who might this 'warrior' be?
DORIAN
The Warrior Princess herself...
CU on Reyann's face
REYANN
(softly)
...Xena.
DORIAN
Yes, my liege. Xena. And her bard friend as well.
REYANN
(beat)
You must be tired, you should go and rest.
DORIAN
Yes, my liege. I will take my leave now.
ON Dorian as he bows and turns to leave the tent.
CAMERA PANS TO Reyann who slumps further into her chair as she slowly removes a small pouch from her belt and removes a necklace from inside.
REYANN
(quietly)
Her bard friend also happens to be the Amazon
queen.
She clenches her fist over the necklace and brings it up to her lips, she lowers her hand slowly and opens her hand, ZOOM IN on the chakram-shaped pendant on the necklace within the hand
REYANN
Wrong place... wrong time...
She SIGHS deeply as she holds the necklace towards the light source, staring hard at it. CU on the chakram pendant as we
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. AMAZON VILLAGE - DAY
CU on the chakram hanging on Xena's side.
ZOOM OUT to the rest of the action.
Amazon DANCE is in progress, MUSIC and DANCING with accompanying SHOUTS to welcome back their rightful queen. Gabrielle and EPHINY are standing on a dais, Xena a little behind Gabrielle. Solari and EPONIN in their positions as the two chief lieutenants are standing in front of the dais. After a flourish, the music stops and
ON Ephiny as she takes a step forward, removing her mask and handing it over to Gabrielle who accepts it with a big smile.
CU on Gabrielle as she lifts the mask up and places it over her head formally. LOUD CHEERS and SHOUTS greet her as the MUSIC picks up again and the dancing resumes.
CUT TO:
INT. REYANN’S TENT - DAY
Contrast the loud music and merriment of the previous scene with the utter silence in the tent.
CAMERA FINDS Reyann still slumped on her chair, staring at the necklace. Suddenly, she straightens up and hastily drops the necklace back into the pouch and stuffing the pouch back into her belt. She quickly picks up her goblet and takes a sip.
ON ARES as he materialises.
ARES
So, Xena and Gabrielle are here.
(beat)
Right where I want them to be.
He waves his hand and two more wooden figurines appear on the table. The figurines represent Xena and Gabrielle. He places them carefully with the Amazons.
ARES
(laughs)
Surrounded. Trapped, like ani...
REYANN
(interrupting)
What do you want, Ares?
ARES
Just wanted to congratulate you on your good
fortune...
(beat)
...and to remind you that no one double crosses
me and gets away with it. Remember our deal...
ON Reyann as she stands up and strides towards the table and Ares
REYANN
Yes, I do remember.
(beat)
And as I told you before... I never fail in whatever
it is I set out to do. Never.
ARES
I do remember that. Do not fail me. I'll be seeing
you soon.
ON Ares as he 'disappears' from view.
ON Reyann as she leans on the table, with both hands, she picks up the 'Xena' and 'Gabrielle' figurines, fingering them tenderly
REYANN
Of all times to pay a visit, why now?
(beat)
This is going to make it so much harder to...
(beat)
Xena. I'm so sorry for what I'm about to do.
Forgive me, Gabrielle. Forgive me, Xena. But
I have no other choice.
CUT TO:
EST SHOT - AMAZON VILLAGE - DAY
Sun is setting. The Amazons are clearing up after their small celebration from earlier.
INT. QUEEN'S HUT - DAY
Also sparsely and simply furnished. No extra frills, just a bed, a table and several chairs which are all taken up by, clockwise, Gabrielle, Xena, Solari, Eponin and Ephiny. The warriors are without their weapons and the mask of queenhood is placed on the table, Gabrielle is playing with the feathers on the mask thoughtfully. Xena has her booted feet up on the table. Mid scene.
ON Xena
XENA
...so have any of you been close to their camp?
EPONIN
Once. I think Reyann heard something because
she looked up and I could have sworn she saw
me, but...
(shrugs)
I just got out of there in a hurry.
XENA
What's the camp like?
EPONIN
One word — organised. Much like we expected.
ON Xena and Gabrielle as they exchange glances
GABRIELLE
Expected? Why?
ON the Amazons who look at each other, all three seem very uneasy. Eponin nudge Ephiny with her elbow and Ephiny glare right back. They stare at each other for several more moments before Gabrielle finally cleared her throat.
CU on Gabrielle
GABRIELLE
Ephiny, why don't you explain?
ON Ephiny's reluctant face before she finally takes a deep breath
EPHINY
Reyann... she lived here in this village for a while...
she came shortly after you two left... the first time
round. She stayed for about a year or so.
(beat)
All of us really took to her, she was a great fighter...
GABRIELLE
Was?
EPHINY
Well, I'm sure she's even better now than before.
The only other person I've seen who is better than
her is Xena.
(beat)
Melosa almost adopted her but Velasca came back
to the village and reclaimed her position. Reyann
warned Melosa not to trust Velasca but Melosa just
wouldn't listen...
Ephiny fell silent.
ON Gabrielle as she gently waits for the rest of the story. She glances at the silent Eponin and Solari for answers, as none seem forthcoming from Ephiny.
GABRIELLE
What happened next?
ON Eponin as she picks up the story
EPONIN
Reyann challenged Velasca and would have
killed her if Melosa hadn't intervened and severely
wounded her...
SOLARI
(continuing)
...she left shortly after and we never saw or even
heard from her again until about two moons ago.
ON Xena as she lifts her feet from the table and stands up. She walk towards the window, staring out of it
XENA
(quietly)
I once knew a Reyann.
ON Gabrielle, Ephiny, Eponin and Solari's curious faces.
EPHINY
Was she in your army?
Back ON Xena, like she never even heard Ephiny's question
XENA
If she is indeed one and the same, then I say
we're in trouble.
GABRIELLE
Why? Was she in your army?
CU on Xena as she
XENA
(gravely)
Yes.
(beat)
She was my chief lieutenant.
ON Gabrielle
GABRIELLE
Chief lieutenant?
Back to CU on Xena
XENA
(nodding her head)
The best I'd ever had. She engineered some of my
greatest triumphs. Corinth. Torentz.
(beat)
She was the biggest reason behind my successes.
ON the other four as they exchange uneasy looks with one another as we
FADE OUT:
ACT TWO
FADE IN:
INT. QUEEN'S HUT - DAY
Continuation from the previous scene.
XENA
Ares always had an eye for Reyann...
A COMMOTION can be heard from outside the hut, shortly followed by the breathless entrance of an Amazon, CILIA.
EPHINY
What's happening, Cilia?
CILIA
(bowing)
My Queen, advance scouts report that Reyann's
army is on the move.
EPHINY
On the move? Towards...
CILIA
(lifting her head to face Ephiny)
She's headed right for us, your Majesty.
(beat)
Should we follow?
Ephiny turns to look at Gabrielle, who in turn glance at Xena. Xena, who is standing at the side, nods her head in silent agreement.
GABRIELLE
Yes, Cilia. Send...
Eponin steps in front of Gabrielle and bowing her head formally,
EPONIN
(interrupting)
My Queen, I would like to seek your permission
in leading the squad.
GABRIELLE
Permission granted, Eponin.
Eponin salutes and turns to leave with Cilia.
EPHINY
Eponin.
Eponin stops and turns back
EPHINY
Please be careful. You've to remember that you're
dealing with a dangerous warlord here.
(beat)
Even if this warlord is Reyann.
Eponin nods her head in acknowledgment and leaves the hut with Cilia. Xena mumbles something inaudible. Gabrielle gets up from her seat, walks over to Xena and places a concerned hand on Xena's arm.
GABRIELLE
What is it, Xena?
XENA
(sighing, not looking at Gabrielle)
Just thinking, Gabrielle. Just thinking.
GABRIELLE
About the army? Or about Reyann?
XENA
Both. I don't understand. How can this be the same
Reyann I know?
(turning to face Gabrielle)
Gabrielle, Reyann left me because...
DISSOLVE TO:
FLASHBACK - INT. XENA'S COMMAND TENT - NIGHT
Superimposed the words "FIVE WINTERS AGO".
Xena, in her old warlord armour and Reyann, also in a different kind of armour, are hunched over a map on the large main table. The tent is simply furnished with the large table in the middle, several other smaller tables and five or six chairs scattered around the room. Maps and various parchments are strewed all over the tables and even on the chairs. Xena and Reyann are arguing, waving their hands around to make their points.
XENA (VO)
(continuing)
...she thought I was getting too... too violent. She
and I got into arguments. Gods know, she was
the only one...
GABRIELLE (VO)
Who dared to argue with you?
XENA (VO)
Yes, but that was because she knew that I would
listen. Actually, she was the only one whom I
trusted with my life. Until one day, shortly after
the battle for Torentz...
CU on Reyann who is gesturing with one hand furiously at the map they're facing.
REYANN
Look, Xena. Torentz is already yours. What
more do you want?
XENA
I want Greece!
REYANN
I know that, but do you have to attack Thrace now?
So soon after Torentz? Give yourself and the
army sometime...
XENA
No! Darphus thinks it's my time now...
REYANN
Xena, Darphus is an idiot.
XENA
(continuing)
...and I agree with Darphus.
(beat)
Does that make me an idiot too?
REYANN
(quietly)
No, Xena. You're not an idiot... which is why you
must...
XENA
(interrupting)
...attack now.
(beat)
Reyann, you can either stand with me, or stand
against me, the choice is entirely yours.
REYANN
Then you leave me no other choice...
CU on Xena's smirk as
REYANN (OS)
(continuing)
...I choose... to stand against you.
Xena's smirk turns into shock as we
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
OUT OF FLASHBACK. Back in the Queen's hut. Gabrielle, Ephiny and Solari are listening with rapt attention.
GABRIELLE
She what?
XENA
She challenged me for leadership of my army.
EPHINY
Obviously she lost.
ON Xena's pained expression as
XENA
Actually, Ephiny, she almost won. If it were
not for Darphus' interference at a crucial moment...
GABRIELLE
He helped you win?
XENA
In truth, he tried to help Reyann against me, but
Reyann saw through his scheme and turned the
tables on him. She herself was severely wounded
in the process.
GABRIELLE
But why did she...
XENA
Why... that’s was the first thing I told her.
DISSOLVE TO:
FLASHBACK - INT. HEALER'S ROOM - DAY
A tiny room with a small window and a tiny bed, on which a pale and wounded Reyann laid. ZOOM IN on Xena clutching her hand by her bedside.
XENA
Why?
REYANN
Because.
XENA
You could've killed me.
REYANN
That was never my intention, Xena.
XENA
Then why...
REYANN
I just wanted you to realise that you're not
invincible. No one is. I would never want to see
you die, Xena.
(beat)
I would rather die first.
XENA
You wouldn't have to. I promise.
ZOOM OUT to Xena tucking the blanket over Reyann.
XENA (VO)
I left her in the temple. Never heard or saw her again.
ZOOM IN on Reyann's face as we
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. PATH - DAY
OUT OF FLASHBACK. CU on Reyann who is leading her army. She is astride a horse with Dorian riding right behind her.
CAMERA PANS upwards and FINDS the 5 silent Amazons hiding in amongst the trees, silently observing.
CAMERA back on Reyann as she perks up suddenly, having heard the faintest of RUSTLE in amongst the trees. She lifts her head and seems to stare straight at Eponin and her band of Amazons. Reyann lifts her right hand up to stop the procession.
ON Dorian as he reins in his horse in surprise.
REYANN
Stay put. I'll handle this myself.
ON Reyann as she launches herself up into the trees to attack the Amazons.
ON the amazed faces of Eponin and the Amazons as they unsheathe their swords to defend themselves. But Reyann is a very good fighter, she uses her hands first to fight off the Amazons and to disarm them, dumping them to the ground below, shaken and finding themselves facing the ends of several menacing swords.
BACK to the remaining fight on the trees, Eponin is facing the now armed Reyann. They're keeping their balance on two separate branches, wearily eyeing each other.
REYANN
Eponin, I don't want to hurt you.
EPONIN
(softly)
You already have.
Reyann lowers her eyes and Eponin makes use of this opportunity to launch her attack. Reyann recovers and defends herself and slowly gains the upper hand in the fight. They exchange blows and tree branches, fully utilising the confining space that they have. Eponin soon finds herself being forced back by the sheer force of Reyann's blows and one final strike and Eponin loses her sword, she finds herself soon following the path taken by her sword, down the trees and onto the ground below, facing the pointed end of a sword.
ON Reyann as she jumps down
REYANN
Dorian, make sure the prisoners are secured.
DORIAN
Yes, my lord.
He turns around to face the soldiers holding the Amazons
DORIAN
You heard our liege. Chain them up!
The soldiers move to comply with the order as chains are brought out and placed around the ankles and waists of the Amazons. ON Eponin as the chains are fastened onto her.
CAMERA FOLLOWS Eponin's gaze and settles on the impassive Reyann. She turns back towards her horse.
REYANN
Dorian, I'm riding ahead. You know where to stop.
DORIAN
Yes, my liege.
ON Reyann as she mounts her horse, sparing one last glance at Eponin and the Amazons before riding off ahead.
DISSOLVE TO:
EST. REYANN'S CAMP - NIGHT
INT. REYANN'S TENT - NIGHT
Similar to the one earlier, the map though is not on the table. On the table instead are plates and bowls with all kinds of food. Reyann is now just dressed in her leathers, her armour having been put aside. She is sitting on her chair, watching
ON the entrance as the chained Amazons are roughly pushed into the tent. Eponin's POV as she looks at the food on the table then at Reyann and then at the departing forms of the soldiers from the tent, turning back she sees Reyann twitching her mouth slightly, rising to her feet.
REYANN
You all must be hungry. A good fight always
does that to me.
EPONIN
So, you're gonna make us watch?
ON Reyann as she faces Eponin
REYANN
No, I want you all to join me.
She removes a bunch of keys from her belt and proceeds to unlock a stunned Eponin and then swiftly one Amazon after another until the Amazons are all free and rubbing their waists gingerly.
REYANN
Sorry.
EPONIN
For?
ON Reyann as she turns her back on the Amazons and walks back to her chair at the head of the table, ignoring Eponin's last question.
EPONIN
Aren't you afraid that we might escape?
REYANN
No, Amazons are not known for their foolhardiness.
(beat)
Have a seat.
EPONIN
(not sitting)
Just what do you want?
REYANN
One of you to deliver a message for me.
(beat)
Your Amazon Queen for the rest of you.
She pours herself a cup of wine, letting her demand sink in
REYANN
But that can wait until after dinner.
(beat)
Come on, if I wanted to kill you all I wouldn't've
bothered capturing you.
With that kind of logic, Eponin slowly takes her seat and followed by the others.
REYANN
One thing though, you can't go Eponin. But you
get to choose who does.
Eponin simply nods her head and brings a spoonful to her mouth as we
DISSOLVE TO:
FILE SHOT OF A FULL MOON
INT. QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
The departure of an Amazon tells us that the demand has been delivered. Gabrielle is seated, watching as Xena paces the room with Solari. Ephiny is also seated beside Gabrielle, her hands covering her face.
ON Xena as she stops suddenly, causing Solari to bump into her from the back. Xena never felt it though Solari did as she rubbed her arm. Xena looks at Gabrielle quietly seating there, determination on her face, she shakes her head
XENA
Oh no, you don't. I'm not letting you...
GABRIELLE
Xena, I don't think we have much of a choice.
XENA
There's always a choice!
Gabrielle shakes her head and addresses Ephiny
GABRIELLE
What do you think Ephiny?
Ephiny looks at first Xena and then Solari and finally Gabrielle
EPHINY
I think you should... no... this should be a decision
you make by yourself. I'll support whatever... you
choose to do.
GABRIELLE
Thank you, Ephiny.
She turns away from Xena
GABRIELLE
Then I choose to exchange myself...
On hearing that Xena grabs hold of Gabrielle and turns her back to face her
XENA
I won't let you do this, Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
Xena, they're my responsibility. I'm their Queen.
I have to do this.
XENA
Gabrielle, I...
Xena struggles for words, failing to find them, she just hugs Gabrielle fiercely.
XENA
If she hurts you, I'll kill her myself.
GABRIELLE
(whispering)
She won't...
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. LARGE CLEARING - DAY
The Amazons emerge from their lands, Gabrielle is wearing her mask. She is flanked by Xena and Ephiny who is also masked. Solari, also masked, is a little behind them. The rest of the masked Amazon guards spread themselves out. They stop and wait. They didn't have long to wait as Reyann, riding her horse, and her mounted escort arrive. Eponin and the remaining 3 Amazons are back in chains and pushed along by Dorian and several other soldiers on foot.
ON Reyann as she dismounts, motioning for the chained Amazons to stand in front of her. She hands the reins of her horse over to Dorian as she takes the bunch of keys from Dorian.
DORIAN
My lord, shouldn't I...
He falters when Reyann gives him a hard look, she turns back to face the assembled Amazons and steps forward
REYANN
(raising her voice)
As you can see, I've brought your sisters. Are you
ready to make the exchange?
ON the trio of Xena, Gabrielle and Ephiny
EPHINY
Why are you doing this, Reyann?
REYANN
I don't have to explain myself to anyone...
XENA
Even to me?
REYANN
Xena, in case you haven't noticed, I'm not your
lieutenant anymore. I don't have to answer to you.
(beat)
Let's not waste anymore time, are you here to make
the exchange or not?
GABRIELLE
(stepping forward)
Yes, I'm ready.
Gabrielle starts to walk towards Reyann, Xena stops her with one hand to Gabrielle's shoulder.
XENA
Hang in there. I promise I'll get you...
Gabrielle gently stops Xena's words by placing her fingers over Xena's mouth.
GABRIELLE
Xena, she won't hurt me.
XENA
How can you be so sure?
GABRIELLE
(hugging Xena)
I know. You'll see.
They reluctantly break off their awkward hug and Gabrielle turns to walk towards Reyann again
GABRIELLE
Let my sisters go, Reyann.
ON Reyann as she nods, she walks up to Eponin. She passes the keys to Eponin
REYANN
Go on.
ZOOM OUT as we see the chained Amazons walk slowly towards their sisters and their lands while Gabrielle walks towards them. Reyann follows behind her prisoners.
ZOOM IN as the chained Amazons meet Gabrielle midway, Gabrielle places a hand on Eponin's arm and continues on until she and Reyann finally meet in the middle of the clearing. They are silent. Reyann's POV as she looks over Gabrielle's shoulders and sees Solari unchaining the other Amazons, while Eponin stands at the side and Xena's cold, hard stare. She returns her gaze back to Gabrielle.
Gabrielle had moved another step towards Reyann until they're almost toe to toe with one another. Gabrielle removes her mask, drops it to the ground and looks straight into Reyann's eyes. ON Reyann as she smiles widely,
REYANN
It's been so long...
She grabs hold of Gabrielle.
ON Xena as she draws her sword
ON Reyann as she pulls Gabrielle, who fully returns the hug, in for a hug
REYANN
I've missed you so much, Gabs.
GABRIELLE
I've missed you too, cousin Re.
ON Xena and Ephiny (who has since removed her mask) as they exchange incredulous looks with one another.

EXT. LARGE CLEARING - DAY
Continuation from the previous scene. Gabrielle and Reyann are still locked in an embrace, while the shocked spectators watch on. Finally, they break apart.
GABRIELLE
Where've you been, Re?
REYANN
Around. I guess...
Reyann is interrupted by a sudden FLASH of light, she instinctively pushes Gabrielle behind her and draws her sword.
ON Xena whose sword is already drawn.
ON Ares as he materialises. He is angry.
ARES
You... you irritating blonde again!
XENA & REYANN
Don't call her that!
ON Xena as she and Reyann exchange quick glances.
ARES
Explain yourself!
REYANN
(laughing)
Ares, what's there to explain? Gabrielle's my
cousin. We grew up together, until... I left and
found my way into Xena's army.
By now, Gabrielle is standing beside Reyann confidently.
GABRIELLE
Re, shall we get going? We need to talk. But
not here.
REYANN
(smiling)
I know... let's go.
Reyann heads towards her horse, holding onto Gabrielle's hand.
ARES
Hold it right there! How about our deal?
Reyann stops and twirls round to face the God of War.
REYANN
Don't worry, it's still on. I still intend to hold up
my end of the deal.
(beat)
It's time the world knows that I was the real reason
behind Xena's greatest triumphs.
(beat)
And the world would remember me as the one who
defeats the Amazons. It'd be easier, now that
Gabrielle's not in the way...
ON Gabrielle as she squeezes Reyann's hand tightly, making Reyann turn to her, Gabrielle shakes her head. Reyann squeezes Gabrielle's hand back and urges her towards her horse. Mounting first she offers a hand to Gabrielle who accepts and is pulled up.
REYANN
(softly only to Gabrielle)
Just like old times, huh?
GABRIELLE
Yeah...
REYANN
Don't worry, Xena! I'll not let Gabrielle be harmed
in any way. Just worry about my army.
She turns her horse round and rides off. Her soldiers follow closely behind.
ON Ares as he stares at their departing forms with an evil smile on his face, he laughs and turns to face Xena and the Amazons.
ARES
Well, Xena, truth hurts, doesn't it? And it could've
so easily been you in her place now...
He laughs again and disappears from view. A BEAT as the Amazons stand around, most already looking defeated. Xena sheathes her sword and turns to Ephiny.
XENA
Ephiny, we've got to get ready.
Ephiny nods
EPHINY
I think you should lead us, Xena.
XENA
But...
EPHINY
Xena, I've got no experience leading in a battle
like this.
(beat)
You're the best.
CU on Xena as she looks ahead
XENA
(softly)

EXT. REYANN'S CAMP - DAY
SOLDIERS are making war preparations, sharpening their swords, mending their armour, grooming their horses, sparring, etc. Dorian can be seen moving about the camp and talking to some of the soldier. ZOOM IN on Dorian as he stops in front of a huge tent, right in the middle of the camp. Sounds of LAUGHTER can be heard as we
CUT TO:
INT. REYANN'S TENT - DAY
Reyann and Gabrielle are seated round Reyann's table, which has plates and plates of all different kinds of foodstuff. The two of them are LAUGHING and obviously enjoying each other's company. A SERVANT enters, carrying a tray filled with yet more food and drinks. Reyann immediately sobers up and nods crisply at the servant.
REYANN
Just put in down here. Leave us.
The servant lowers her head and proceeds to do just as she has been ordered.
ON Gabrielle as she looks at Reyann with a beseeching look and places one hand over Reyann's.
GABRIELLE
Re...
REYANN
(not looking at Gabrielle)
What?
Gabrielle tugs at Reyann's hand until Reyann finally looks at her and when she does, Gabrielle motions towards the servant.
REYANN
(rolling her eyes)
Thank you... what's your name?
The servant looks up, surprise evident in her face, she smiles timidly as she answers
SERVANT
Josie, my lord.
REYANN
Well, thank you, Josie.
The servant lowers her head again and quietly exits the tent.
REYANN
Gabs, I'm a warlord, not some kind of a mushball...
GABRIELLE
Good manners doesn't make one a mushball. In fact,
being a warlord doesn't mean that you don't need...
Reyann puts her hands up, a sign of mock surrender.
REYANN
Okay, okay. I'll try to remember that.
GABRIELLE
(mock air)
See that you do.
They settle into a comfortable silence. ON Reyann as she picks a nut up but instead of placing it into her mouth, she flings it across, towards Gabrielle.
ON Gabrielle as the nut hits her squarely on her chest and she quickly grabs a handful of nuts and pleats it towards Reyann. Soon, a minor food-fight gets underway, with Reyann easily getting more 'shots' in then Gabrielle. They stand up, LAUGHING and throwing food at one another as we
CUT TO:
EXT. AMAZON VILLAGE - DAY
CAMERA FINDS Xena who is making rounds with Solari about the village. All over the village, Amazon warriors are sharpening their blades, tightening their bows, mending their armour and shields, all in all, similar preparations as Reyann's army. Xena makes frequent stops to talk to some of the warriors, Solari by her side as well. The mood is solemn and serious. Mid-way through, they meet up with Eponin who came out of a nearby hut and the 3 of them continue on.
XENA'S POV as she notices Ephiny standing outside the queen's hut, silently observing. She looks at first Solari and then Eponin, seeing their respective nods, the three of them head towards Ephiny.
CUT TO:
INT. REYANN'S TENT - DAY
Gabrielle and Reyann are now sitting back on their chairs, splats of food can be seen all around the table and on their clothes. They are looking at their hands until Gabrielle can't resist peeking at Reyann. Wrong thing to do as they burst out LAUGHING again.
ON Gabrielle as she suddenly stops laughing and squirms in her seat, reaching into her bodice and pulling out a nut. She has an incredulous look on her face and Gabrielle’s POV as she stares at the still mirthful Reyann, who is clasping a hand over her mouth.
REYANN
(laughing)
By the Gods, Gabs! Your face! The look on
your face!
ON Gabrielle as she tries to stay annoyed but failing which, she joins in the laughter.
CUT TO:
EXT. OUTSIDE AMAZON QUEEN'S HUT - DAY
Xena, Eponin and Solari have just made their way to Ephiny who is just standing outside the hut.
EPHINY'S POV as she stares at the rest of the village and her fellow Amazon sisters preparing for a war. Eponin and Solari salutes Ephiny who barely acknowledges their greeting. She closes her eyes and lowers her head.
ON Xena as she walks up to Ephiny and places a hand on Ephiny's shoulder. Ephiny looks up at Xena.
EPHINY
I never thought that the Amazon Nation would end
while I was in charge...
XENA
Ephiny, snap out of this. You mustn't feel this way.
C'mon, let's go in and talk.
Ephiny nods her head in agreement; she turns round and heads into the hut without another word. Xena motions for Eponin and Solari to follow behind as she takes one last lingering look at the village before joining them in the hut.
CUT TO:
INT. REYANN'S TENT - DAY
Gabrielle and Reyann have finally stopped laughing and are now contentedly sitting down. The mood has turned serious.
GABRIELLE
Why are you doing this, Re?
REYANN
I don't have any choice.
GABRIELLE
Everyone has a choice.
REYANN
Not I. Not then, and certainly not now.
GABRIELLE
Then? As in when you made that deal with Ares?
REYANN
Yes.
GABRIELLE
Why did you make a deal with Ares?
REYANN
I had to...
GABRIELLE
But why did you?
Reyann shakes her head and remains silent.
GABRIELLE
Re, please tell me. Just what kind of a deal did
you make with Ares and why?
Gabrielle reaches over and places a hand over Reyann's, silently begging for the truth.
REYANN
(sighing)
I could never deny you anything... even when we
were kids. And the funny thing is — you're the
one who's older.
GABRIELLE
Barely six days older, but who's counting?
(beat)
You were the only one who was ever interested
in my stories...
REYANN
You're a good bard.
(beat)
At least one of us got to live out our dreams. Things
just didn't turn out... the way I thought...
GABRIELLE
If you hadn't saved me from that...
Reyann reaches over and places a finger on Gabrielle's mouth, stopping her words.
CU on Gabrielle as a single tear rolls down her cheek.
REYANN
Don't. For all the people I've killed, I've never
regretted killing him. Never.
Gabrielle removes Reyann's finger and turns to clutch her hand tightly
GABRIELLE
I just wish... you...
Reyann places her free hand on Gabrielle's cheek and wipes away the tears streaming down Gabrielle's face with her thumb.
REYANN
Gabrielle? Please don't cry. Please? I... what has
happened has happened. And we can't change that.
I hate to cause you any kind of pain...
Reyann move to face Gabrielle, shifting Gabrielle's chair in the process, she kneels down in front of Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
I'm... so sorry... I...
REYANN
Maybe I shouldn't have brought you here.
GABRIELLE
No!
(beat)
I've missed you so much.
REYANN
And I you, but...
(beat)
I can think of someone who can cheer you up
in no time.
Reyann smiles as she stands up, pulling Gabrielle up at the same time.
REYANN
C'mon, let's dry your tears and then we'll go for
a ride.
GABRIELLE
(reluctantly)
Ride?
REYANN
That's right. A ride. C'mon...
CAMERA FOLLOWS with Reyann as she gently drags Gabrielle to the side of her tent with a wash basin and gently uses a cloth to clean Gabrielle's face.
DISSOLVE TO:
EST. AMAZON VILLAGE - NIGHT
INT. AMAZON FOOD HUT - NIGHT
As stated in the name it is a food hut, and the Amazons are having dinner. CAMERA FINDS Xena, Ephiny, Eponin and Solari seated at the head table. All the tables are filled with food and all the Amazons are eating heartily and quite a few are enjoying a few drinks as well.
ON Xena who nods to Ephiny who acknowledges and then rises to her feet. The Amazons quiet down to listen.
EPHINY
Sisters of the Amazon Nation hear me! Our Nation
is faced with a grave threat brought about by one
who had lived amongst us.
(beat)
Reyann is a fine warrior and if the stories are to be
believed... an even better general. We will not under-
estimate her but she, and all others that might come
after her, should not under-estimate us either!
(beat)
We must prove to them once and for all that we will
not be pushed around! We are still a power to be
reckoned with!
The Amazons present respond with a resounding "YES!" all raising to their feet, stomping them, CLAPPING and HOWLING their agreement. ON Xena as she breaks into a wide smile.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. OUTSIDE QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
It is long after dinner, Xena is helping Ephiny, who has had a little too much to drink back to the queen's hut. CAMERA FOLLOWS them into the hut
INT. QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
ON Xena as she stumbles in, helping Ephiny onto the bed. She then moves to the table to light a candle. Lighting it, the room reveals two shadowed forms. Initially Xena doesn't notice them but soon she sees the shadows of the two of them. She snaps back round and sees Gabrielle and Reyann, sitting in two of the chairs by the window, each grinning at her. Xena is shocked

INT. QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
Continuation of previous scene. Dim light reveals the shadowed, seated forms of Reyann and Gabrielle, side by side. Xena is standing still near the bed where Ephiny is sleeping.
ON Reyann as she lights another candle and hands it over to Gabrielle who uses that candle to light the one that is next to her.
The light in the hut is brighter now and we can see Xena looking/staring at Reyann warily.
XENA
Gabrielle, are you all right?
GABRIELLE
(smiling)
Xena, of course I am. Reyann has always taken
very good care of me. Even when we were kids.
Gabrielle had stood up during her speech and walked over to where Xena is standing, placing a reassuring hand on Xena's arm. Xena looks down at Gabrielle affectionately, ruffling Gabrielle's hair. Wiping the smile off her face, she turns her attention back to the silently observing Reyann.
XENA
You don't have to do this, Reyann.
REYANN
Yes, I do.
XENA
Reyann...
REYANN
(standing up)
Xena, I've made my choice.
XENA
Then change it before you...
REYANN
(continuing for Xena)
...destroy the entire Amazon Nation?
XENA
(beat)
Yes. Is that what you really want?
REYANN
(shouting)
No! That is so not what I want...
(calming down)
but... Ares won't let me out of our deal unless I
destroy either Hercules or the Amazon Nation.
Would you rather I kill Hercules?
XENA
No, but why did you make such a deal with Ares
anyway?
Reyann shakes her head
GABRIELLE
Re, please tell us the truth. Let us understand...
REYANN
To what end? But if you really want to know...
ON Xena and Gabrielle's empathic nods.
REYANN
(quietly)
I did it to save Gabrielle. And to save your soul.
ON Xena and Gabrielle's shared shocked look.
XENA
What are you talking about?
REYANN
Thessaly.
GABRIELLE
What do you mean?
REYANN
Ares came to me one day and told me that Xena
would soon be returning to his fold. Told me to
ready myself to rejoin Xena. I... I couldn't allow
that to happen.
XENA
So you made a deal with Ares for Gabrielle's life?
REYANN
Yes. I made my choice, now I've just got to live
with it.
ON Reyann looks towards Ephiny's slumbering form
REYANN
I know... this isn't right... but I... really don't want
to lead Ares' army anymore. I'm so tired but he
won't let go of me unless I...
CU Reyann as she covers her hands over her head momentarily, after a while, she drops her hands.
REYANN
Gabrielle?
GABRIELLE
Yes, Re?
REYANN
Would you mind getting us something to drink?
Please?
GABRIELLE
(reluctantly)
Okay. I... I won't be long.
Reyann's POV as she watches Gabrielle leaving the hut, she turns to face Xena.
REYANN
Xena, there is another way...
Xena nods, understanding what Reyann mean, she looks at Reyann as we

INT. QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
Continuation of previous scene. CU on one of the candles as it has burnt down quite a bit, indicating the passage of time.
ON Reyann as she stands by the window, staring out into the night.
ON Xena as she sits on one of the chairs, fingers on her chin.
ON the door as Gabrielle enters the hut, trying hard to balance a tray with 2 pitchers (one larger than the other) and 3 mugs. Xena rises to help Gabrielle carry the tray in. Reyann turns back to face them.
GABRIELLE
Sorry it took so long... so, what did you two
talk about while I was gone?
Xena pours the drinks. From the larger pitcher, into 2 of the mugs and the smaller one into one mug which she hands to Gabrielle. Reyann helps herself to one of the other mugs and Xena picks up the last one. They raise their mugs for a silent toast, none knowing quite what to say. They drink, Reyann downs her mug in one go, placing it back down she
REYANN
I've got to get going.
GABRIELLE
So soon?
REYANN
Yeah, sorry. But I'll see you tomorrow.
GABRIELLE
Tomorrow?
REYANN
Yeah, tomorrow.
GABRIELLE
(surprised)
Don't you want me to go back with you?
REYANN
(smiling)
No, Gabrielle. Don't be silly now.
Reyann ruffles Gabrielle's hair affectionately and then addresses Xena
REYANN
Dusk tomorrow, Xena.
XENA
We'll be there.
ON Xena and Reyann as they share a warrior's forearm to forearm grasp. Reyann hugs Gabrielle one more time before walking to the door. Looking to her left and then to her right before stepping out of the door and into the surrounding darkness.
GABRIELLE
What's going on tomorrow?
XENA
At the clearing tomorrow... Reyann... she'll challenge
me to a duel.
GABRIELLE
A duel? But why?
XENA
It's the only way to prevent an all-out war. Which
is what both of us want to avoid. I... we don't have
any choice, Gabrielle.
GABRIELLE
(quietly)
Is it going to be a fight to the death?
XENA
Yes.
CU on Gabrielle's horrified expression as we
DISSOLVE TO:
FILE SHOT OF A SETTING SUN
EXT. CLEARING - DAY
Same clearing as the one used in the 'exchange' scene. Reyann's massive army is already assembled there with Reyann at the front, on her horse. Dorian is just behind her. Slowly, the Amazon warriors come out from the trees, all masked and fully armed and armoured. All except for Xena who is at their front, on Argo and with Gabrielle seated behind her.
ON Xena and Gabrielle as they come to a stop. Xena helps Gabrielle down before getting down herself.
ON Gabrielle as she removes her mask, her eyes are red from crying.
ON Reyann who has also made way down her horse, she sees Gabrielle's face and lowers her head. Taking a deep breath, she lifts her head back up and
REYANN
Amazons! I know you've chosen Xena to lead you
today. I've thought of a way to end this with
minimum bloodshed.
XENA
Just what are you proposing, Reyann?
REYANN
We never did finish our little duel the last time
round... some one interfered. Care to try again?
XENA
A duel? You and me?
REYANN
Yes, Xena. A duel. You and me. To the death.
XENA
I accept.
ON Ephiny who has made her way to Xena's other side.
EPHINY
Xena, there's got to be another way...
ON Xena as she looks into Ephiny's eyes
XENA
Ephiny, you asked me to lead the Amazons.
I'm doing just that.
EPHINY
But... Gabrielle, you can't let her...
ON Gabrielle's sad face
GABRIELLE
(quietly)
It's their choice...
Xena takes a step forward as does Reyann. Ephiny tries to stop Xena.
EPHINY
Xena, listen to me. You've got to think about...
XENA
We have, Ephiny. There is no other choice.
She continues on, finally meeting Reyann in the middle of the clearing.
REYANN
Ares!
XENA
Artemis!
REYANN & XENA
Hear us!
ON one side as 2 bright flashes, signaling the arrival of the two Gods. Ares, the God of War and ARTEMIS, the patron goddess of the Amazons.
ARES
Yes, my chosen warrior?
ARTEMIS
The champion of my people, what is it you desire?
XENA
A fair fight, with no interference by anyone.
REYANN
The first to draw blood, wins.
XENA
If I win, the army leaves the Amazons alone for
all eternity.
REYANN
And if I win, the Amazons will serve me for all eternity.
There will be no need for any further bloodshed.
ARTEMIS
Agreed.
ARES
I agree. This is going to be one glorious day!
He laughs evilly, eyeing Xena and then Reyann.
ON Xena and Reyann as they listen, taking a step back, they begin their fight. Starting with just their hands, they try to find their way into each others' defences. Flipping over each other, the fight is glorious. Then Reyann manages to get inside Xena's defence first and kicks hard into Xena’s mid-section. Xena flips back and unsheathes her sword, Reyann does likewise.
They circle each other warily, waiting for the other to lunge first. Finally, Reyann does try to slash Xena first. Xena blocks the intended strike and strikes one of her own, which Reyann also succeeds in blocking. Then they proceed to trade a series of strikes and blocks and counterstrikes.
Then, the 2 combatants lock up and ZOOM IN as they lock eyes with one another.
CU on Reyann's hand as she suddenly grabs hold of Xena's sword and with a sad smile she looks up at Xena. ON Xena as she realises what Reyann is about to do but is helpless to prevent it as Reyann plunges the sword through her body and then pulls it out. Xena drops the sword as Reyann slumps to the ground.
All this time, Ares and the army does not see bit of action because Xena's back is facing them but Artemis and the Amazons (and Gabrielle) are able to see it all happening.
ON Gabrielle
GABRIELLE
Reyann! No!
As she rushes forward towards the slumped form of her cousin in a stunned Xena's arms.
ON Ares as he catches sight of his chosen warrior falling.
ARES
No! How can this be?
ARTEMIS
Your chosen has lost. It's time for you and your
army to leave.
Ares turns to Artemis, seemingly wanting to argue but then with a growl he disappears together with the army.
Artemis' POV as she turns towards Xena, Gabrielle and the dying Reyann still in Xena's arms. Gabrielle has Reyann's bloody hand in her own, gently stroking Reyann's face, tears flowing down without abandon. Artemis walks towards them as Ephiny, Eponin and Solari also runs to be with Gabrielle and Xena.
ON Xena
XENA
Why, Reyann? Why did you do that?
REYANN
Wasn't sure if Ares was... going to accept 'first
blood drawn'... had to be sure...
GABRIELLE
You planned this?
REYANN
(nods weakly)
To kill Xena... would mean to kill a part of you...
I can't... do that... I... love you both...
GABRIELLE
Re...
REYANN
Hush now... this is a good thing...
GABRIELLE
How can this be good?
REYANN
I'm free now, Gabs. Forever.
ARTEMIS
That was a very selfless thing you did, Reyann. I
can't give you your life back but I can...
REYANN
Time, I need some time... please.
ARTEMIS
Say no more. I'll ask the Fates to give you till
sunrise tomorrow. In meantime...
She places a hand over Reyann's wound, stopping the blood flow.
ARTEMIS
This is the best I can do... I can't remove all your
pain but...
REYANN
I know... thank you.
ARTEMIS
No, thank you, Reyann.
GABRIELLE
Thank you, Artemis.
ARTEMIS
It's the least I can do. Wish I could do more.
Ephiny, build a litter to transport Reyann back.
EPHINY
Yes, Artemis. Eponin, Solari, c'mon, we've got
work to do.
Ephiny, Eponin and Solari stood up together as Artemis 'disappears' from view.

INT. QUEEN'S HUT - NIGHT
It is almost daybreak. Reyann is laying, propped up on the bed, dressed in a simple shift, Gabrielle is clutching her right hand, while Xena is on her left hand side. Ephiny and Solari are also in the hut. They have been busy reminiscing about the past they had with each other and with Reyann, each knowing that there wasn't much time left. Mid-scene.
XENA
Sounds like both of you were scamps.
GABRIELLE
(giggling)
To say the least.
(beat)
I'm going to miss you so, Re.
REYANN
Gabrielle, what did I say before? This is not...
GABRIELLE
I know... but I'm still gonna miss you. And after
all these years thinking that the worst had already
happened to you, only to find out...
REYANN
That the worst did happen to me?
GABRIELLE
If you hadn't...
REYANN
Gabs...
XENA
What?
REYANN
Nothing, it's nothing.
GABRIELLE
It's not nothing. If you hadn't killed because you
wanted to save me, you wouldn't had to leave...
REYANN
Gabs, I saw him trying to do it. I couldn't just stand
there and watch him destroy your innocence. I just
couldn't... I had to do something... maybe I shouldn't
have runaway. But then I wouldn't have been caught by
slavers and I wouldn't have met Xena. I guess its fate.
ON Reyann's pained expression as she suddenly grabs hold of her wound on her right side. Blood.
GABRIELLE
Xena!
Xena walks over to Gabrielle's side and slowly lifts the bandage up, CU on the wound, blood is flowing again.
GABRIELLE
Xena, can't you do something? Anything?
ON Xena as she looks at Gabrielle then Reyann helplessly.
XENA
Gabrielle, I...
REYANN
Gabs, there's nothing Xena can do. I should've
been dead hours ago. I guess this is their way of
saying that I don't have much time left.
GABRIELLE
Re...
REYANN
No regrets, Gabs. I've made my choices...
ON the entrance as Eponin enters the hut. All heads turn to look at her.
EPONIN
All is ready.
Ephiny nods in acknowledgement.
XENA
Reyann, are you comfortable?
REYANN
I'm fine. Xena, remember the necklace you
gave me at the temple?
XENA
Yes, I remember.
REYANN
Ephiny, do you mind finding my pouch for me?
It should be somewhere in my stuff.
EPHINY
Of course not. Give me a minute...
She turns to the table where Reyann's leathers and armour is placed, Solari and Eponin goes and helps her out. They look about for a while and finally Ephiny locates the pouch.
EPHINY
Got it. Is it this one?
Ephiny brings it to Reyann who takes it.
REYANN

Reyann struggles to remove the string tying the pouch, Gabrielle takes the pouch from her and opens it. Reyann smiles as Gabrielle reaches into the pouch and removes the chakram necklace from within.
GABRIELLE
Xena, this looks...
XENA
Reyann, you still have this?
REYANN
Of course I do. You gave it to me and now, I'm
giving it to you, Gabrielle.
Reyann takes the necklace from Gabrielle and proceeds to tie it round Gabrielle's neck before collasping back on her bed.
CU on the chakram on the necklace.
CU on Xena's chakram hanging on her belt.
CU on Xena's face as tears threaten to fall.
CU on Gabrielle whose tears have started to fall.
CU on Reyann who closes her eyes for the last time and her hand falls from Gabrielle’s grasp.

EXT. AMAZON VILLAGE - DAY
An Amazon funeral pyre is burning, Gabrielle is standing on the dais with Xena and Ephiny. Eponin and Solari are standing just below them. Other Amazon warriors are standing round the pyre, paying their last respects to Reyann.
ON Gabrielle as she clutches her new necklace tightly and closes her eyes
GABRIELLE (VO)
I know you can hear me, Re. Know that we're
gonna miss you, especially me but life goes on.
I won't let you die for nothing. Re, I'll make
sure the Amazons thrive for many more years
to come. You look out for them now, you hear?
She opens her eyes and looks up to Xena whose eyes are also closed
XENA (VO)
Reyann, I never thought I would see this day.
I'm not good with this but I just want you to know
that I'll keep your cousin safe. I promise. And I
won't let you die in vain, Ares will never win me back.
Xena's POV as she opens her eyes, looking down she sees Gabrielle smiling through her tears at her. She smiles back crookedly. They hold their gaze for a moment longer and then look back towards the burning pyre.
