CHAPTER #14 ----- THE SEARCH FOR SOLAN |

"Gabrielle... Gabrielle... Gabrielle..." Xena repeated over and over, nudging her best friend awake.
"Huh?" was Gabrielle's hoarse reply.
"I had the same nightmare..." Xena whispered. She picked up her sword and stood up.
Gabrielle sat up slowly. "Xena..." she whined.
"Look. You can go with me or stay here," Xena sheathed her sword. Gabrielle frowned, her eyes still closed.
"I'm coming, I'm coming," she whined. She got up, threw some water from a bucket on her face, and grabbed her staff.
"What about breakfast?" she asked, only half joking.
"Forget it," Xena said in a flat tone of voice. She opened the door and slammed it behind her, leaving Gabrielle speechless.
"Alright..." Gabrielle stretched out the word. She was ready in a minute, and raced out to the stables. She realized Xena hadn't even waited for her. Gabrielle marched down the road to Kaleipus' house and banged on the door. Kaleipus answered the door, looking frightened.
"Kaleipus! I hope I didn't wake you up... I know Xena is here, and I just wanted to tell her that-" Gabrielle kept her eyes on the centaur as she stopped talking.
"Xena? She's not here... neither is Solan," Kaleipus shivered.
"What?" Gabrielle said skeptically.
"I haven't seen Xena since this afternoon. Solan just kind of... disappeared. I had a weird dream... and awoke, hearing the door slam shut."
"Don't you lock your doors at night?"
"Yes! That's what I don't understand."
Gabrielle was worried... Xena and Solan were gone, and there was no sign of struggle from either of them.
"Could Xena have..." Gabrielle shook off the bad thoughts. "Could she have gone out to look for him?" she changed the end of her sentence.
"Maybe..." Kaleipus got antsy. "I'm going to look for him now. At first, I wanted to believe that he went out to get an early breakfast, or visit his father's grave... but it's been hours!" Kaleipus walked outside, wide awake. Gabrielle nodded and hopped on the centaur's back.
"Let's go," Gabrielle agreed.
They approached the stables. There was no sign of either of them. Then they headed into the woods. Gabrielle heard a sound. It came from back at the inn.
It sounded like someone trying to open a door - forcefully.
There was another sound, only this time it came from the woods. It was Xena's battlecry. Gabrielle dismounted the centaur and glanced at Kaleipus. They stood there, in shock - debating on what to do.
