"Fine, I'll do it," Gabrielle agreed.
Danaka threw her head back and laughed.
"I can't wait to see this!" she cackled.
Gabrielle frowned.
"Yeah, well, what are the rules to this?" Gabrielle asked.
"Rules are there are no rules - except that you can't get help from anyone," Danaka added.
"Oh, that narrows it down," Gabrielle muttered.
"My army and I will travel several yards behind you, and follow wherever you go. I will have one of my men, Donerik, to walk with you to make sure you don't try anything... stupid," Danaka motioned for a huge warrior to walk alongside Argo.
He was at least six foot five and Gabrielle had to strain her neck to look up at him.
By the following morning, everyone was ready, and Gabrielle walked carefully to the fork in the road.
"Xena," Gabrielle hissed.
"No, Callisto, you got yourself into this, you figure it out," Xena said loudly.
Danaka looked at Xena suspiciously.
"I wasn't asking that! Ha! You think I don't know my way home! I was trying to say that I needed to go... you know..." Gabrielle winked at Xena.
"Oh, yeah, go ahead. I'll tell Danaka and then I'll pass you some scrolls," Xena got the hint.
"Callisto is busy... she'll be done in a minute," Xena approached Danaka and her army.
"Fine," Danaka nodded.
Xena walked over to Argo and searched through her pouch. With a scroll, she wrote quickly with a quill Gabrielle had used earlier when writing her stories.
Xena tapped it on her tongue casually and simply wrote the word "incorrect".
She handed Gabrielle the scroll through the bushes and walked off briskly.
"What does that mean?" Gabrielle hissed at Xena when she came out from behind the bush.
"Just what it says," Xena smiled.
At the fork in the road, Gabrielle paused.
"What's the matter?" Danaka asked tauntingly. "Amnesia?"
"No," Gabrielle stretched out the word. She frowned and thought. Incorrect?
"Not right!" Gabrielle yelped. Xena smirked as Gabrielle lead the group to the left.
Gabrielle sauntered towards the left road, leading everyone for about a mile until they came to the ocean.
"Xena..." Gabrielle said, her voice sounding worried.
Xena remained calm and said one word.
"Tide," she muttered.
Gabrielle frowned.
"Well? What now?" Danaka approached the two, smirking. Gabrielle looked at Xena. Then it dawned on her.
"We wait," Gabrielle announced proudly. "We wait for the tide."
Danaka nodded as she told her army to set up camp for the night. They rested for about three hours when Xena awoke to cold water.
The tide had come in her tent and was about to crash against it again in another second.
She woke up Gabrielle and in no time, everyone was back on their feet.
"Get your things ready - the tide will go all the way back in soon," Xena said knowingly.
After the tide was far back from the camp, Donerik and Gabrielle lead the way to a valley that was noticeable in between the mountains.
"Why do you do this?" Gabrielle asked the tall man.
"Do what?" Donerik asked in a surprisingly deep voice.
"You follow Danaka like a puppy," Gabrielle said. The man didn't answer.
Gabrielle shrugged and they traveled the rest of the way in silence. That's when she noticed there was no sign of Xena.
She stopped suddenly, staring at Danaka.
Danaka grinned and shook her head.
Gabrielle felt her stomach turn into knots.
If Gabrielle asks now where Xena is, go to chapter #20.
If Gabrielle keeps her mouth shut and asks after they reach Cirra, go to chapter #21.
