CHAPTER #1 ----- JUST THE BEGINNING |

"That's all right," Xena looked up at the sky. "Looks like were headed right into a storm. Let's get to shelter for a while."
"Just where are we going?" Gabrielle asked for the millionth time that day.
"I told you, we are going somewhere I feel I have to go," Xena said quickly.
"If I told you, you might get bored and stay at the inn we'll be at," she grinned.
Gabrielle shook her head. "Xena, whatever it is, I'll be there."
"Thanks," Xena said as they got up and headed towards the nearest town. They traveled for about an hour, and came to an inn.
"One room, and two drinks - a water and a port," Xena ordered the man behind the counter. The man nodded as Xena gave him a bag of dinars.
"Xena, look at this! Doesn't this look familiar?" Gabrielle called to the warrior from across the room. Xena lowered her head so as not to draw attention towards the two. She was known in these parts, and mostly not for the better.
Xena walked over to Gabrielle, staring at the object hung on the tavern wall. The sword was dull, and had a unique design to it. It wasn't straight and sharp like usual swords. It was jagged and terribly painful to be hit with. Xena would know.
"Xena, we're not really going to stay here-" Gabrielle started as she realized where they were. The last time she was in this town, she found a man sitting alone at a table in this familiar tavern, and she approached him. She started conversation with him, only to find out later that his father was an evil warlord who wanted to kill Xena. All he gave to Gabrielle was his name - Sphaerus. He never told her that he was the one who shot Xena with the arrow. To make a long story short, Xena ended up killing the warlord Cycnus, and the town was at peace again.
For the duration.
Lately, Xena and Gabrielle had heard stories from travelers. Terrible stories about a monster in these parts. The "monster" was a warlord from the Parthien province. His name was Cycnus. He was known for his ways to get anything out of anyone. Including free crops, services, and slaves. He had chosen this village for his own, and the village was now almost as bad as before.
It was destined to get worse.
Xena walked over to her table, Gabrielle following close behind. They quietly downed their drinks and headed to their inn room. Gabrielle fell asleep in no time, and Xena stayed up for a while, thinking about the day ahead of her. She watched her companion sleep as she fell asleep herself.
She ran through the forest.
"No! He's mine! Bring him back!" the warrior princess exclaimed, tears streaming down her face.
The monster ran faster, Xena slowed down, close to fainting. She screamed for Gabrielle to help her. No one arrived. The monster stayed in view. The young boy being carried by the monster had long blond hair, and was crying out for someone.
His mother.
Xena jolted awake. Gabrielle looked at her quizzically.
"Are you all right? You were making weird noises in your sleep," she whispered, trying to comfort her best friend.
Xena tried to slow down her rapid breathing.
"I have to find him," she said quietly, her voice cracking.
"Who?" Gabrielle sat up, beginning to worry. Xena rarely acted like this.
"He's in trouble."
"Xena... who?" Gabrielle insisted.
"My son."
